With more and more reports coming out about the toxicity of makeup, women everywhere are finding new, more natural products to apply to their skin. While Salt Lake is beginning to bring in more organic and all natural stores, such as Good Earth, Whole Foods and Sunflower Markets, it is still difficult to find makeup that is free of chemicals and affordable. It seems like your only cosmetic choices are expensive organic brands or cheaper toxic products.
Luckily, there is a third solution. Making your own makeup is an easy and affordable alternative that requires very few ingredients-many of which you probably already have in your cupboards. For instance, this lip and cheek stain from ecoetsy.com uses olive oil, honey and beets to achieve a bright hue plus staying power, yet has no chemicals. You get a healthy product that delivers the look of a stain without any toxins. You could also substitute the beets with strawberries, raspberries or any other fruit/vegetable to get a different color that may be more suitable for your skin tone. Remember, when making your own makeup using produce, always try to get the organic variety. You are applying it directly to your skin after all so make sure it is as free from pesticides as it can be.
Natural Cheek and Lip Stain
What you will need:
- A beet
- Olive oil
- Honey
- Vitamin E (optional)
Directions:
- Cut the beet in half and peel off skin. Dice beet into small pieces.
- Place the beets along with 2 Tbsp of olive oil and 1 Tbsp of honey into blender or food processor. Optional: you can add about ½ tsp or 1 capsule of Vitamin E in as well
- Puree the ingredients until smooth.
- Pour mixture over sieve and drain out all liquid, using a spoon or fingers to compress solids and squeeze out liquid.
- Pour liquid into small container.
To apply: using a cotton swab or old lip gloss applicator, place 2-4 dots of stain on cheek and rub in immediately. Swipe stain over lips.
Tips:
This liquid stain can be kept in the fridge for up to 4 weeks or pour into ice cube trays and keep in the freezer for 2 months.
If you don’t have a swab or applicator, don’t be afraid to use fingers. Wash hands (and counter, etc) quickly after and the stain will come off easily.
If you don’t care for the taste of beets, I would recommend skipping the lip part or substituting a different fruit/veggie.
Tried a different color source that worked well? Let me know!
