As many of you might imagine, one of the most important rooms in our homes is the kitchen. It is not only important for the gathering of our family but, it is vital to our health too. According to Feng Shui, it is also the room in our homes that contributes significantly to our wealth. As a result, it is important to maintain a kitchen that is clean, clutter-free, and inviting. Does your kitchen meet these criteria? If not there is plenty you can do.
First, begin by taking the time to clean out your pantry, your refrigerator, and your spice cabinet or drawer. Seek out those items that are old, those items you will never use, and those items that simply do not belong. Keep only those foods that represent your vision for maintaining good health. Organize the remaining contents so important items are easily accessible and can meet your needs.
Next, take a look at the contents in the remainder of your cabinets and closets. Do you use everything that is there or do you have items that are better off in the garbage or donated? According to Ann Bingley Gallops of Open Spaces Feng Shui in New York City, “There is no hiding from Feng Shui eyes.” So, out of sight is not the equivalent of out of mind. The contents of your cabinets and their organization are important to the flow of energy in your kitchen.
Finally, take care of the little things and perhaps enhance your kitchen decor a bit. Here are some more tips from Ann Bingley Gallops:
- Clean everything off your countertops. Keep out only the things you use at least a few times a week.
- The most important area of the kitchen is the stove (it is highly symbolic in Feng Shui). Keep the stove spotless and make sure all of the burners work. The stove is used to nourish your family and the burners bring health and wealth into your home. By putting mirrors behind your stove, you double your wealth by doubling the amount of burners (you must of course, keep the mirrors clean). The mirrors also allow the person cooking to be in the command position where they can see everything in the room rather than just facing a wall.
- Make sure wealth is not “leaking” away… fix everything including leaks, broken handles, knobs, loose hinges, etc. All of these small issues make it difficult to move through the kitchen and move through our lives.
- Use pictures that represent abundance or display a bowl of fresh, healthy fruit.
- Create balance in the kitchen between the different elements: wood (living and green things), fire (red things and the stove), earth (countertops), water (sink), and metal (metal utensils).
