What Are Goals
Goals are your aspirations for the future. According to the self-help professionals; the only sure way to accomplish anything is to set goals, write them down, and follow them through. Some people may not think that setting goals are necessary, but just think of how things are attained. For example, if someone wants to complete any course of education, they must first decide on what they want, enroll in a school and there they will receive a plan or schedule of courses with a timeline in which to achieve their academic goals.
The Five Steps of Setting Goals
1. SEE WHAT YOU WANT. Visualization is step No. 1. Sit in a chair and imagine yourself happy. Be specific. Be clear. One big reason people fail to reach their goals is that those goals were amorphous or not specific to begin with. A goal like "buying a house soon" has no substance, too vague. Deciding that you'd like to buy a three-bedroom brick home on a half-acre within 30 minutes of your workplace before the next school year is much better. There's no need to be practical about this--think big. Try to imagine as many aspects of the outcome as you can.
2. WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN. A goal must be in writing. Like any good idea, goals need to be written down so that you can refer back to them; it is recommended that you look at your written goals daily. Also, take some action daily, no matter how small the action toward achieving that goal. You may decide to change them or to abandon them. That's your prerogative.
Experts on memory conclude that if we do not write things down, we are likely to forget them, and even more likely to not execute the things we wish to do. Unless you make an effort to retain something you wish to accomplish, perhaps by repeating it to yourself over and over or creating an association; it will be more difficult to realize. The most effective method is writing down goals; it is essential to success.
3. TURN EACH GOAL INTO AN ACTION PLAN. Break each goal down into the steps you'll need to take to achieve it. Say your goal is to save $5,000 in the next year. That may sound daunting--but saving $100 a week for 50 weeks doesn't. Remember to work on something that moves you toward your goal each day.
4. UNDERSTAND THE TIME INVOLVED. Put a measurable time on when this goal should be completed. Remember to be conservative on your time expectations. We often overestimate how much we can accomplish in a single day and underestimate how much we can accomplish in a year. At the very least, give just a little progress each day. The same principal applies whether you are teaching a child to swim, writing a book or trying to lose 10 pounds. Quick fixes rarely work.
5. WORK YOUR PLAN EVERY DAY UNTIL COMPLETION. Review your goals daily, or several times a day. Persistence and tenacity are the secrets to success. President Calvin Coolidge wrote:
