Make- Up Artist Profile: Melinda "Moka" Johnson

Melinda "Moka" Johnson is a Make-Up Artist that creates beauty with her brushes. She can turn a plain jane into a gorgeous beauty with the swipe of her brush. A local Detroiter, born and raised, she answered some questions regarding her career and her passion for the artisty of Make-up.

How did you first get interested in make-up? and How did you get started in the industry professionally?

I learned about make-up from my mom. She wore it and she has always been so beautiful to me and I wanted to look like her. She allowed me to wear foundation in order to conceal a birthmark I have under my eye. As time went on, I started to experiement more. A friend introduced me to M.A.C. cosmetics about 12 years ago and my love blossomed from there. I worked for the company for about 7 years, but I have been enhancing the beauty of women for about 9 years.

 Who are your make-up icons?

Pat McGrath, Keyvn Aucoin and Gucci Westman

Locally - Sydni Jones and Jennifer James - I have learned SO much from these ladies.  They are truly superb at their craft and wonderful women

What do you see as the current trends in make-up?

The current trend for make-up is: the red lip.  Metallic for the eyes (for highlight and dimension).  Smokey eyes never go out of style.  I am seeing a combination of smokey with metallics.  Big, thick, bold eyelashes are all over magazine covers.

What drives you to be creative?

I feel that creativity is in my blood.  My grandmother, aunt and mother all sew.  My mom and brother are excellent drawers/painters.  My creative niche comes from what I see around me.  From a painting to a design on a piece of material.

What is your advice for up and coming make-up artists?

Study the history of make-up, learn about other artist that have paved the way.  Learn color theory.  Seek out classes/seminars to enhance your skills.  And never live in a box
