Many members of the Republican Party believe that attacking Barack Obama is all their candidates need to do to win the presidential election in 2012. That may be true, but why not offer the American people something they really want and try to win in a landslide?
Some candidates like Michele Bachman have been talking about how Social Security is nothing but a Ponzi scheme. Why not offer a solution to the Ponzi scheme?
Here is a solution:
1) The federal government owns over 30% of the land in the United States.
2) Sell the federally owned land and use the money to buy annuities for the people already receiving Social Security checks. Add the average amount paid to Medicare recipients to those annuities.
3) Pay back the people who are not yet receiving Social Security checks the money they paid into Social Security with the same amount of interest they would receive from a savings account.
4) The people who have not paid into Social Security would not receive anything, but they would not be paying into Social Security.
Another problem is out of control government spending. Social Security is part of that problem but other spending cuts would help.
As Adam Smith says in “The Wealth of Nations”, a free market capitalist economy does not need government control. The invisible hand of the market place controls the economy. The invisible hand consists of self interest and competition along with supply and demand. That is all that is needed to control a free market capitalist economy.
One easy way to cut spending is to defund the regulatory agencies of government.
A candidate who uses the above ideas as platform planks would gain large pockets of support among the general public.
