When “conservative groups” sound the alarm about the budget deal, about what specifically are they objecting?

More Photos

Here is a list of possible conservative objections:

  1. They believe that social security benefits of all kinds are too excessive, even those to which pensioners have contributed all of their working lives. (That was their money that conservatives want to rob from pensioners.)
  2. They believe that government should weaken its regulatory arm over business to reduce government cost and size while liberating business and industry to become more competitive. (Capitalists seek profit at all costs to society and the environment.)
  3. They don’t mind excessive defense spending because many conservatives have vested interest in the aerospace and defense industry where they make a ton of money from taxpayers.
  4. They don’t want even the hint that wealthy persons and corporations might have to contribute more to the revenue shortfall.

Now, under President Obama and the unworkable conservative-led House of Representatives, there isn’t a prayer of resolving any of these issues until American voters express what the define as the way forward by the people the elect to office in Election 2014.

“Conservative groups sound alarm over tentative budget deal
Published December 11, 2013FoxNews.com

Conservative groups pushed back hard against the proposed federal budget agreement announced Tuesday, arguing that the tentative deal unravels hard-fought spending cuts.

Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., and House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis, the lead negotiators on the agreement, detailed the specifics of the proposal at an evening press conference.

The proposal would restore about $63 billion in funding that had been cut by the so-called sequester. Officials said the increases would be offset by a variety of spending reductions and increased fees elsewhere in the budget totaling about $85 billion over a decade, leaving enough for a largely symbolic deficit cut of $23 billion over the next decade.

The deal sets discretionary spending levels at just over $1 trillion, which is higher than the hard-fought level of $967 billion set in a 2011 budget pact.

While Ryan predicted that conservatives would support the bill and GOP leaders praised the negotiators, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., came out against it.”

Now, consider the situation a little more deeply.

1. Conservatives believe that social security benefits of all kinds are too excessive, even those to which pensioners have contributed all of their working lives.

Paul Krugman: Expanding Social Security

Social Security benefits "should be expanded, not cut":
Where is this coming from? One answer is that the fiscal scolds driving the cut-Social-Security orthodoxy have, deservedly, lost a lot of credibility over the past few years. ... Beyond that, America’s overall retirement system is in big trouble. ...
Many workers used to have defined-benefit retirement plans, plans in which their employers guaranteed a steady income after retirement. And a fair number of seniors ... are still collecting benefits from such plans.

Today, however, workers who have any retirement plan at all generally have defined-contribution plans — basically, 401(k)’s... The trouble is that at this point it’s clear that the shift to 401(k)’s was a gigantic failure. Employers took advantage of the switch to surreptitiously cut benefits; investment returns have been far lower than workers were told to expect; and, to be fair, many people haven’t managed their money wisely.”

(That was their money that conservatives want to rob from pensioners.)

2. Conservatives believe that government should weaken its regulatory arm over business to reduce government cost and size while liberating business and industry to become more competitive.

(Capitalists seek profit at all costs to society and the environment.)

For instance, weakening the Environmental Protection Agency permits industry polluters to keep on spoiling the air and water while the planet is at a tipping point.

3. Conservatives don’t mind excessive defense spending because many conservatives have vested interest in the aerospace and defense industry where they make a ton of money from taxpayers.

They own and operate the major defense contractors. For instance, Dick Cheney's wife was once on the board of directors for Lockheed Martin while Cheney himself was CEO of Halliburton.

4. Conservatives don’t want even the hint that wealthy persons and corporations might have to contribute more to the revenue shortfall.

Wealth is skewed with 90% in the hands of 1%.
