Make the perfect Mother's Day gift this year (on the cheap!) -- free step-by-step tutorial (part 1)

All About Mom album
"All About Mom" album

Let's be honest. Mother's Day gifts come in two flavors: cheap and expensive. Cheap like your average spray-painted macaroni jewelry box, and expensive like your average diamond-studded heart-shaped pendant to put in that macaroni jewelry box. And let's be honest. Mom loves both kinds.

This year, you don't have to spend a ton to get that teary-eyed smile. With a little time and effort, you can put together the perfect Mother's Day album, and it doesn't have to cost much at all.

The secret to the perfect Mother's Day mini-album is kids. Preferably little kids. They can be talking about their mom, their grandma, or their aunt, but they're guaranteed to have something interesting to say about her.

We'll call this album "All About Mom," although it can just as easily be "All About Grandma" or "All About Aunt Sue." It's very simple to put together. Just gather some photos, and interview some kids.

You can ask the kids anything, but here is a list of the questions I used for this album. Remember to substitute "grandma" or "Aunt Sue" for "mom," if that is the subject at hand.

  1. What is something your mom always says to you?
  2. What makes your mom happy?
  3. What makes your mom sad?
  4. How does your mom make you laugh?
  5. What was your mom like as a child?
  6. How old is your mom?
  7. How tall is your mom?
  8. What is your mom's favorite thing to do?
  9. What does your mom do when you're not around?
  10. If your mom becomes famous, what will it be for?
  11. What is your mom really good at?
  12. What is your mom not very good at?
  13. What does your mom do for her job?
  14. What is your mom's favorite food?
  15. What makes you proud of your mom?
  16. If your mom were a cartoon character, who would she be?
  17. What do you and your mom do together?
  18. How are you and your mom the same?
  19. How are you and your mom different?
  20. How do you know your mom loves you?
  21. What does your mom like most about your dad?
  22. Where is your mom's favorite place to go?
  23. What does your mom do to relax?
  24. How do you know when your mom is mad?
  25. If you could give your mom anything, what would it be?

From experience, I know that sometimes kids need a little pressure to answer. If they say, "I don't know," tell them to guess. Try to get an answer for each question. Don't forget -- and this is the important thing -- you need to write down exactly what they say, word for word. Half the fun of reading their answers is imagining those cute little voices.

Once you've got your interview(s) done, what's left is assembling the album. You can choose any format you like, but here's how I did it.

I'm so disappointed that half of the pictures wouldn't load. The beginning of the album looks so cute!

What a great idea! I was struggling for a gift and now I think I will send these questions to all my Mom's grandchildren. I'm running out of time so it might just be a mini photo-album rather than something as cute as this but I know she will love it! Thanks for taking the time to come up with these questions!

I believe I've fixed the issue with the pictures. Let me know if you're still having problems.
