The Greatest Challenge Our Children Face Today
In our world today, violence, chaos, anger, poverty, alcohol and drug addiction, and a variety of other social ills are becoming more and more prevalent. Our children are assaulted from many directions with an ever increasing number of challenges socially, economically, spiritually, and it many other ways as it becomes more difficult to not only survive but thrive in today's society. As a result, it is not difficult to understand why many find their self-esteem eroding and their positive belief in their future being challenged.
High self-esteem is undoubtedly one of the most critical prerequisites for a life marked by competence, fulfillment, contentment and accomplishment. Healthy self-esteem is a precondition for developing respect and empathy for others. It is the basis for accepting responsibility for our actions and for gaining satisfaction from our achievements. Those possessing healthy self-esteem are more likely to both create dreams and pursue them intentionally. By believing in their ability to accomplish these ideas, children will grow into adults possessing high self-esteem and will be self-motivated to grow and risk as they fully experience life. They will not be excessively discouraged by the inevitable challenges and criticisms that anyone pursuing a worthwhile goal is sure to encounter. People with healthy esteem possess the ability to love themselves -- a prerequisite to love and be loved by others. In every way, a healthy sense of self-worth is a necessary requirement to lead an empowered life marked by positive self-direction, trust, responsibility and accomplishment.
Low self-esteem is frequently associated with criminal activities, drug and alcohol addiction, poverty, violent behavior, eating disorders, educational dropouts and low socio-economic status. Those lacking self-esteem often display aggressive, egotistical, harmful and defensive behavior along with an unwillingness to put themselves in another person’s shoes. Healthy self-esteem goes far beyond only possessing a good physical self-image. Too many confuse self-esteem with ego, vanity, arrogance or self-centeredness. In fact, such qualities typically indicate a lack of healthy self-esteem. Physically attractive people may also have self-esteem issues. Having authentic self-esteem means feeling good about how you see yourself, as a happy person of high intrinsic value and contribution, able to produce a worthwhile result. People possessing this quality have confidence not only in themselves but also in their ability to influence others in a positive manner. They act decisively and show respect for others by taking responsibility for their actions rather than casting blame, avoiding risk and fearing failure.
As humans, we are all magnificent by nature. We possess the ability to overcome obstacles, achieve meaningful accomplishments, honor our most important values, attain happiness and contribute our special, unique gifts to others. In short, we can take responsibility for making our lives work optimally. Unfortunately, through the course of experiencing life’s challenges, children and the adults they grow into often lose sight of these facts.
From birth and continuing throughout their lifetimes, children encounter countless experiences that can either enhance their self-esteem or erode it. The process of diminishing self-esteem begins with a simple observation that a child somehow does not measure up. They judge themselves as different and deficient in some way. They decide that they don’t belong. From this point, their lives unfold in accordance with their expectations. These expectations directly relate to how they feel about themselves. Either they are worthy of all the good things life can offer or they deserve pain and suffering because they lack value.
When they judge themselves harshly, they dramatically diminish their ability to merit love and achieve the success and abundance the world reserves for those most valuable. When they base their actions upon the belief that they lack what it takes to deserve rich relationships, material wealth and happiness, children trigger those very things that they fear most: As their self-esteem insidiously continues to diminish, they find themselves incapable of directing their lives and fortunes productively. Resignation sets in like dry rot, killing their spirits. This ensures that deeming themselves as undeserving will viciously cycle into results consistent with this expectation and reinforces their sense of worthlessness. The lower their self-esteem drops, the less likely they are to act in a way that will generate positive feedback to elevate their deteriorating self-worth.
The all too prevalent cycle of diminishing self-esteem can be interrupted and reversed with the help of adults who possess the tools to intervene and support children to access their internal magnificence and grow into capable, competent, significant, worthy, and compassionate adults who possess high self-esteem and the personal effectiveness to achieve their dreams and powerfully relate to others.
By becoming a self-esteem elevation coach possessing the skills to impact children's lives, one can market oneself to partner with parents, teachers, coaches, counselors, boys and girls clubs, and a variety of other organizations committed to the well-being of children. Self-Esteem coaches can take their skills to schools and parent-teacher organizations by offering their services to teach educational professionals the skills that they will need to produce a new generation of high esteem children. There are many benefits to becoming a self-esteem elevation coach for children or adults. Self-esteem elevation coaches set their own hours, are self-employed, need no employees, and can operate from their home offices with little overhead and simply the support of a telephone and computer. Typical fees charged by self-esteem elevation coaches range from $60-$250 per hour by phone or in person. The coaches often work with parents, teachers, and other professionals, teaching them the tools to allow them to become more effective impacting the children that they work with. Self-esteem elevation coaches also often work directly with children to assist them in developing the skills to better deal with life's problems and challenges. These can include bullying situations, effectively dealing with challenges at home or at school, as well as strategies designed to approach all of the typical challenges that life can offer.
Self-esteem elevation coaches can teach parents such concepts as the need to interact with children from a perspective of unconditional love, the value of speaking to and interacting with children respectfully, while acknowledging them daily. Effective coaches teach adults to live by example and acknowledge when they made a mistake, and how to take action to apologize, cleanup mistakes, and learn from each experience with a commitment to do better in the future. They can teach children the value of gratitude for the blessings that each possesses and empathy for what it's like in the other person’s world as well as forgiveness for when they or others make mistakes. Successful coaches realize that every child possesses unique talents and gifts and their job is to empower children to realize their greatest potential. Self-esteem coaches work hand-in-hand with educational professionals and parents to ensure that children develop sound work habits, while ensuring that they balance school work with recreational, athletic and fun activities to support mind, body, and spiritual health. Coaches assist children to put into place habits that support accomplishment. These might include visioning, goal setting, and taking daily action in pursuit of their commitments. Children who work with self-esteem elevation coaches learn the importance of honoring their core values, having integrity, and dealing effectively with others. Furthermore, they learn the value of personal development, knowing that each day offers a new opportunity to discover more about themselves and how to develop their charisma and personal effectiveness in relating to other children and adults. These, in addition to so many other foundational success principles form the foundation for accomplishment that self-esteem coaches successfully impart to children and the adults who work with them.
