Sidewalk Chalk Recipe: Buy some Plaster of Paris and some powdered tempera paint. Both these items may be available at your local Wal-Mart. If not available there, try a Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or any craft store. You can also try Home Depot or Lowe's. You will also need some molds. You can use empty toilet paper rolls or you can also use larger size candy molds for fancy chalk. Another good mold is a small paper cup. One you start making your own sidewalk chalk you will be looking at everything in the house to see if it can be a mold. Mix 1 cup of Plaster of Paris with 3/4 cup of water and mix well. Then add a bit of any color powdered tempera paint. Start by adding just a spoonful and mix. Then keep adding the paint until you get the color you want. Once you have mixed your ingredients you can put the mix in your mold. If you are using toilet paper rolls just pack the mixture in the roll. If you are using other types of mold just firmly press the mixture into the molds. Set the molds aside and let them dry completely. This may take a day or two depending on the humidity. If the molds are small they may be dry in as little as a few hours. When they are dry take the chalk out of the molds and let them sit to dry for another 24 hours. Your homemade sidewalk chalk is now ready! |
