'Make It or Break It' will return for Olympic run

Make It or Break It, ABC Family's teen drama about Olympic gymnastics hopefuls, has been renewed for a third season, the New York Daily News reported earlier this week.

You have to wonder if the show, which seemed to be faltering at the end of its second season, was saved by fortuitous timing. The real Olympics are just around the corner, so while we wait for those why not indulge in some catty, unrealistic fantasy gymnastics?

The big news on the show is that it's unclear whether Chelsea Hobbs, who played Emily Kmetko, will be included amongst the cast. Emily's character was essentially written off the show at the end of season two when Hobbs became pregnant (subsequently, her character did as well.)

Hobbs herself is unsure of Emily's fate. "For everyone asking if Emily will be back, it's in the producers hands, right now I'm focusing on other work but never say never :)" Hobbs tweeted this week.

Perhaps the producers believe it would be just too unrealistic for a pregnant gymnast to have a child several months before the Olympic Games and go on to compete in said Games. It would be too much of a Hollywood ending even for Hollywood.

But they'd be wrong. Oksana Chusovitina, gymnastics's extreme outlier, competed at the 2000 Olympics 10 months after giving birth to son Alisher. The Netherlands's Suzanne Harmes earned her country's only Olympic berth in 2008 only 13 months after having son Lugano. To do so, Harmes beat two women who had never been pregnant.

Food for thought for the producers and Hobbs, who delivered a baby boy in May.
