Make It a Tech-Whimsical Valentine's Day

Feb. 14, 2012 – After wading through all the flowers, candy, lingerie and balloons to settle upon your perfect love offering for Valentine’s Day, why not add a little tech-whimsy to your gift to bring an extra smile to the face of your sweetheart?

Come on! You’ve still got time. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  • Hide among the red roses a pair of red-corded earphones like, “ibeats by Dr. Dre” in-ear headphones with control talk, to help your sweetie enjoy the sound of his or her music as well as better voice deliver clearer calls. Radioshack stocks beats and a number of other reasonably priced earphones.
  • Wrap balloons around the wristband of the latest edition of iPod Nano, on which you, of course, you have downloaded a few of your favorite love songs or other romantic tunes to celebrate your love.
  • Draw, paste or paint a red heart on poster board and, on either side, spread out (like jazz hands) and attach a pair of Isotoner tech-friendly SmarTouch gloves, which are still on sale at Macy’s
  •  Place an electronic book reader inside a candy box. Make sure it is properly supplied with your favorite Valentine’s Day love poems or books of inspiration, such as Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou or Her Beauty Touches Everything: I Love My Girlfriend by Louis Cannizzaro. (The slim, red Sony Reader Touch Edition  is on sale for $99 thru Feb. 18 at Walmart and your local Sony store or online).
  • Get up early and replace your sweetheart’s phone case with one decked with big, lovely hearts. (You can find one at a kiosk at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City or nearly any local mall).
  • If you are not getting together with your loved one until the weekend, then surrounding a pair of WiFi cufflinks in a bed of chocolate strawberries might do the trick. Find out more about the cufflinks, which have 2 GB of storage and the ability to create a WiFi hotspot, at cufflinks.com
  •  Hide a QR Code bracelet or necklace within your gift of lingerie for an added surprise message that's revealed when your lover holds it up to a phone or tablet. QR code jewelry comes with pre-determined sayings or can be personalized to express your own heartfelt message. Check out technocharm.com or look for QR jewelry at your jeweler.
