Make a St. Valentine's Day robot box

Remember decorating tissue boxes for St. Valentine’s Day? Your teacher helped you to wrap the box in paper and to glue pink and red hearts to the sides. Valentine mail boxes have come a long way since those days. Look around a classroom today and you will see boxes that look like monsters, kitty cats and race cars. Some schools even have contests to see who can come up with the most creative mail box. Below, you will find instructions for creating a robot box for St. Valentine’s Day that your child can decorate and enjoy. Be sure to take a look at the slide show for examples.

Materials:
Cardboard boxes (at least two sizes)
Glue gun
Scissors
Silver or Gold spray paint
Cardboard tubes (4 or more)
Permanent markers (red and black)
Craft odds and ends such as googly eyes and heart stickers (optional)

Instructions:
1. Take the boxes and tubes to a well-ventilated area and cover with silver or gold spray paint. Allow to dry.
2. Cut a slot in the larger box for the valentines. If desired, a trap door can be cut in the back of the box for easier removal of the cards.
3. Cut tabs in one side of each of the cardboard tubes to make it easier to glue them to the boxes.
4. Put your robot together. The smaller box will be glued to the larger box to create the head. The tabs of the cardboard tubes will be glued to the sides of the larger box to form the arms and legs.
5. Decorate your robot. You can draw details with permanent markers or you can use craft supplies such as googly eyes, buttons and heart stickers.
