Halloween season is upon us and of course, a cat lover’s favorite way to decorate is with black, orange or Tortie cats. There are so many different decorations to make. One of my favorite is the super cute muslin cat. It is quite easy to make, equally inexpensive and one you will want to put away and use year after year.
The items you will need for this fun project are a 4 ½ inch by 44 inch piece of muslin, some poly fiberfill, tracing paper, acrylic paints in orange, yellow, pink, black and white, paint brushes and a small sponge brush, embroidery floss in black, an embroidery needle, some Stiffy fabric stiffener, ground cinnamon and ground cloves.
Trace an outline of a cute cat pattern onto tracing paper and then cut it out. On muslin doubled over, trace the pattern once for each for the desired number of cat faces you want, making sure to leave a 1/2 -inch between the shapes.
Sew around each shape through doubled muslin, leaving small openings on the pattern.
Cut out shapes a slight 1/4-inch from stitching. Trim curves and corners. Spin created shapes right side out and stuff with the fiberfill. Slip-stitch openings shut.
Paint the back and front of a cat face with black and give it time to dry. Draw features on the face. You may want to mix mouth shapes on cats, o sloping some mouths to one side. You can also make winking eyes. Paint eyes, with yellow; allow it plenty of time to dry. Paint mouth and nose with pink and whiskers with black or off-white. Give the eyes large pupils for Halloween night vision.
Mix Stiffy with black paint until the mixture is off white for light effects. Make use of the sponge brush to paint each shape with the mixture. Permit the shapes time to dry completely
To finish the project, rub ground cinnamon and cloves on the fronts and backs. Finally, wipe off excess spices.
These make great gifts for the office. They don’t take up much room and it’s so nice to take in the pleasant scent they give off.
