Make a floral scarf pillow

Add a touch of spring color to your decor with this easy floral scarf pillow.

This project was inspired by Urban Outfitters' floral scarf pillow, which retails for $28. Rather than buy a pillow influenced by a scarf, why not make a pillow from a scarf for a project that only costs a few dollars.

For this project you will need a:

  • scarf
  • pillow or pillow form
  • straight pins
  • needle and thread. (This project will go faster with a sewing machine but can be done with hand sewing.)

To keep the work involved in making a pillow cover as simple as possible, we will transform the scarf into an envelope pillow cover. An envelope cover eliminates the need for a zipper and keeps the sewing of seams to a minimum.

An envelope pillow cover is basically one long piece of fabric that wraps around the back of your pillow. The two ends of your fabric will overlap a few inches on the back of the pillow. You can insert and remove your pillow through the opening in the back.

First, you will need to find a scarf that will fit around your pillow form and allow a little extra fabric.

Most scarves are larger than pillows. Therefore, consider the dimensions of your scarf when folded in half. In this project, I used a sheer square scarf. I folded it in half to make a rectangle. In general, your scarf fabric will need to be a few inches wider than your pillow and double the length of your pillow plus about three to five extra inches for overlap.

To figure out how your scarf will fit around the pillow, wrap the scarf around the pillow form and size up your overlap on the back side of the pillow. (See slideshow.) You will need the two ends to overlap about three to five inches.

Next, fold back the two short ends of your rectangle by an inch or so and hem. (See slideshow.) If  your fabric is several inches too long, simply increase the hem so that your two ends only overlap three to five inches.

After hemming the two short ends of your fabric, wrap your scarf around the pillow again.

Now, pin along the two open sides of your pillow to create a "pin seam".

Pull your pillow form out through the flap in the back.

Stitch along your  "pin seam", removing pins as you come to them.

Turn the pillow cover right side out and insert the pillow through the flap in the back.
