“I have made a covenant with my eyes.” – Job 31:1a
We must do as Job did and make a covenant with our eyes. Do you realize that the eyes are the window to the soul? Both our eyes and our ears are gateways into our inner beings. The devil is having a field day with all of the filth that he has put in the hearts of people and broadcasted through the airways of television, radio, and the internet. Please know that this does not mean we shouldn’t watch TV, listen to the radio, or use the internet. All of these things can be of great blessings or of great curses. We need to use the wisdom of God to discern what is good and what is harmful. Let us not throw out the baby with the bathwater.
Matthew 6:22-23 testifies that “the lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” This warning should strike the hearts of God’s people. What we let into our eyes and ears; whether it be light or darkness, is what will fill our souls and will either build us up or destroy us.
The Word of God informs and puts us on notice that Satan is the prince of the air (Ephesians 2:2). As such, he is able to control all that travels through the air, which includes broadcasting. The sons and daughters of God have the power to thwart that control; but sadly, too many of God’s own children participate in the very thing that they should be warring against. Tragically, may people continue to feed their souls with a daily diet of vomit served up by the world.
When I was a growing up, I thought my mother was over-reacting by not letting us watch certain television programs that seemed harmless. Now, as an adult and parent, I have had to apologize to my mother for my disobedience to her in this and many other areas; and because she was in no way overreacting, but exercising the wisdom of God and trying to protect my siblings and me.
I am so very careful about what I allow my eyes to gaze upon and my ears to hear. I do not put myself in situations where I expose myself to wrong things to enter into my soul. Even at the gym, I have my own music that I play, which is God’s music. My television viewing is very selective.
I hear some of you saying “Oh Brother Matt, you are over-reacting.” That is what I used to say to my mother and others who said this to me; until I found myself snared by the devil because I took his bait through what I watched and allowed myself to hear. It took me many years; and for some things, decades to undo the damage that I did to my soul. As evangelist and apologist Dr. Ravi Zacharias so wisely stated “it is better to shun the bait than to struggle in the snare.” We need to stop slowly boiling ourselves to death in the pot filled with sewage.
I am deeply grieved by the amount of absolute filth and trash that is allowed to be broadcasted today; and am even more troubled that parents allow their children’s souls to be corrupted and contaminated. Parents, let this serve as a stern warning: you will be held accountable to God for the raising of your children until they reach the age of accountability.
The Hebrew word for “made”, as used in this verse, is karath (pr. kaw-rath) meaning “to cut, to covenant by cutting flesh and passing between the pieces, be freed” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). The covenant that Job made with his eyes was not a covenant of bondage; on the contrary, it was a covenant of freedom, life, and liberty because he chose to forsake the ways of the flesh for the walk in the spirit.
The word “covenant” as used here is briyth (pr. ber-eeth) which is “a compact, made by passing between pieces of flesh” (Strong’s). Job took this compact so seriously that he made this covenant twice, by virtue of the meaning of both “made” and “covenant”; which I find as a powerful witness to having two eyes (one covenant for each eye).
In Biblical days, people, tribes, territories, and countries took the act of making a covenant as a sacred, serious, and permanent commitment. Individuals took it so seriously, that they would cut an animal in parts (usually two) and literally walk between their pieces of flesh, to denote that they were now one.
This covenant is for you today, and has been set for a divinely appointed time, which is now. Won’t you surrender to the Father today by allowing Him to pull you out of the pit of slime and destruction, out of the mud and mire, and give you a firm place to stand? (Psalm 40:2). God has His Holy Hand outstretched to you right now, son and daughter. Grasp it and you will never be the same again.
Father, thank You for your Word that instructs, corrects, and protects us. We are so grateful to You for enlightening the eyes of our understanding with who You are. Loving Father, put a check, a halt, in our spirit every time we start to watch or listen to something that will cause us harm. We only want to allow into our eyes and ears those things that will nourish our soul with life and bring us closer to You. In Jesus Name, we thank You for the work of Your Holy Spirit that has already begun in us this very moment. Amen and Amen.
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to guard what enters into your eyes and ears by not exposing yourself to the fatal fumes of the world. Ask God for direction on everything you watch and hear, and He will give it to you through His Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Truth (John 16:13). And continue to fight the good fight of nourishing your soul with the sustenance of the Father; for God, your Rivers of Living Water and Cattle on a Thousand Hills, has already given you the victory!
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
