A major winter storm is starting to develop along the North Carolina coast this morning. Rain has spread into all of central and souther New Jersey while snow has started over portions of the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas. As the storm intensifies, temperatures will hold in the upper 20′s to lower 30′s over the northern interior, mid 30′s for the New York City metropolitan area, upper 30′s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and lower to mid 40′s along the New Jersey coast.
This afternoon through tonight, the low pressure system will track towards the New Jersey coastal waters and intensify. Cold air will be drawn towards the coast, leading to temperatures falling through the 30′s and into the 20′s this afternoon and evening. All locations will change over to snow, which will become heavy at times. Meanwhile, winds will increase to 15 to 30 mph with gusts over 40 mph. Wind gusts along the coast could exceed 60 mph tonight as the storm explodes. Coastal flooding will be a significant concern along the coast with tides seven feet above normal, expected levels.
The snow will end from west to east tomorrow morning with skies clear by tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures will struggle tomorrow in the upper 20′s to mid 30′s.
