Erik Haula scored a short-handed goal in the first period, but received a major penalty and game misconduct early in the third period that turned momentum and cost the Minnesota Wild a victory at the American Airlines Center Saturday.
Haula had speed and the angle on a rush, but Cody Eakin caught his skate and forced him into goaltender Kari Lehtonen. Haula was tripped and given a penalty for it six minutes and 37 seconds into the third period.
The Dallas Stars capitalized on the five-minute power play when Tyler Seguin beat Darcy Kuemper between the legs on a rebound from his own shot. The Wild were 26 seconds away from killing the penalty before Seguin tied the game.
Erik Cole scored the eventual game-winning goal when he intercepted Keith Ballard’s cross-ice pass intended for Clayton Stoner at the Stars’ blue line. Cole beat Kuemper with shot off the post and into the net on the breakaway with four minutes and 49 seconds remaining in the game.
The Wild (34-22-7) erased a pair of one-goal deficits before taking their first lead early in the third period when Kyle Brodziak beat Lehtonen from the slot. Brodziak intercepted a crosss-ice pass from Brendan Dillon at the Stars blue line.
Haula got the Wild on the board with a rocket wrist shot off a short-handed rush. Mikko Koivu sent Haula into the Stars’ zone with speed with a cross-ice pass in the neutral zone.
The Stars (31-23-10) scored goals less than two minutes into the first and second periods to take their first two one-goal leads.
The Wild evened the score at 2-2 on the power play just past the midway point of the second period when Charlie Coyle knocked a rebound past Lehtonen. Recently acquired forward Matt Moulson got the first whack at the rebound off a shot by Jonas Brodin to record his first point as a member of the Wild.
The Wild return to action Sunday against the St. Louis Blues at the Xcel Energy Center.
