The Pennsylvania Turnpike was closed in both directions from about 6:30 a.m. today Dec 20, 2013 due to a traffic accident that involved at least three tractor trailers. By 7:15 a.m. west bound traffic was moving but it was down to one lane as workers began to remove debris.
The accident actually happened in the eastbound lane right at the Rt 1 overpass. The cause of the crash is not known but motorists said that a truck that lost it's load of steel was the cause of the crash. That is not confirmed at press time. Three medic units were called to the scene. The injuries were from minor to serious.
Conflicting traffic reports infuriated motorists. The real story is westbound, towards Harrisburg is down to one lane with intermittent closures. Eastbound is completely closed. All traffic must exit at Rt 1, (or exit 351). The road is expected to be closed for at least four hours.
The trucks were jackknifed and allover the road which meant that all traffic was at a standstill. There was no way to get them through and emergency vehicles had a hard time getting to the scene. Multiple people were stuck in a backlog between the exit and the crash scene. until emergency crews could figure a way to get them to turn around and exit at 351.
