The 2010 Winter Olympics are drawing to a close, which means that Shaun White, Kim Yu-Na, Lindsey Vonn and all the other athletes who have captured our attention for the past two weeks are moving off the world stage for a while. But there are still venues, even aside from World Cup competitons and X-Games events, where you can pay tribute to your favorite cold-weather athletes. Several winter sports have their own Hall of Fame, with exhibits honoring the game’s greatest competitors:
Hockey Hall of Fame - Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Since ice hockey is the Canadian national sport, it's appropriate that the
Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Toronto, Ontario. The Hall opened in 1961 and moved to a new building in 1993. More than 300 players, coaches and officials are featured in this 57,000-square-foot building: everyone from the game’s early all-stars, such as Eddie Shore and Georges Vezina, to more recent greats, including Wayne Gretzky and Ray Bourque. There are exhibits on Olympic contests, Stanley Cup dynasties, and more. Additionally, there is an
International Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston, Ontario, with more displays about the history of ice hockey.
Figure Skating Hall of Fame - Colorado Springs, Colorado
From Sonja Henie, Peggy Fleming and Dick Button to Katarina Witt, Kristi Yamaguchi and Scott Hamilton, dozens of Olympic champions and all-time greats are enshrined in the
Figure Skating Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The museum also features the world’s largest collection of memorabilia and films related to the popular sport of figure skating.
Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame - Ishpeming , Michigan
Michigan may seem like an unusual choice for the
Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, but the city of Ishpeming is where the National Skiing Association was first organized a century ago. This Hall of Fame focuses on Americans, but honors more than 300 individuals, from early pioneers to such recent Olympic champions as Picabo Street and Tommy Moe. The museum has 15,000-square-feet of exhibits, including a large collection of skiing memorabilia and archives.
Speed Skating Hall of Fame - Milwaukee, Wisconsin
There are nearly 100 inductees into the Speedskating Hall of Fame, including Olympic greats Dan Jansen and Bonnie Blair, although there isn’t yet a building with exhibits on these athletes. That will soon change, however, as plans are underway to open a
National Speedskating Museum and Hall of Fame at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee. In the future, you’ll be able to honor the sport’s greats at this facility. Perhaps in time for Appolo Ohno’s induction ceremony!
