A Maine Democrat will make another effort to legalize and tax marijuana, WABI TV reported Friday.
According to Maine legislative records, an effort by state Rep. Diane Russell (D-Portland) was previously defeated on a 107-39 vote in 2011.
The proposal, HP 1067, would have imposed a 7-percent tax on marijuana sold either commercially or for medical use.
“A person may possess up to one pound of prepared marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia and an incidental amount of marijuana,” her legislation proposed.
The bill would also have allowed 75 square feet of a residence to be used for the cultivation and storage of marijuana.
Someone with a business license would have been allowed to devote up to 2,000 square feet for marijuana cultivation, but could not sell more than 2.5 ounces per week to any customer.
The bill also would have granted marijuana smokers the right to smoke in areas designated as smoking areas for tobacco smokers.
Possession of marijuana on school grounds, school buses, in jails, public places and public transportation would continue to be illegal.
