Maine ghost stories: Be on the lookout for Millinocket’s 'white lady ghost'

Residents of Millinocket, Maine, located in Northern Penobscot county, will tell you that although the Haynesville woods may have had a song written about it – its not the only haunted location in northern Maine. This town’s paranormal claim is remarkably similar, but it seems they have some evidence to back up their strange tale.

Sometime in the 1930’s or 40’s, a young newly wed couple was traveling down the road toward the green bridge when their vehicle suddenly veered off the road and overturned in the ditch. Husband and wife escaped apparent injury. The young man instructed his wife to wait at the scene of the accident while he went for help. When he returned his wife had mysteriously disappeared and was never seen again.

Residents confirm that an overturned vehicle lies in the ditch of the old Brownville Road where it has remained since the day of the accident.

Paranormal reports include the apparition of a lady dressed in white walking along the bridge on foggy nights.

One anonymous source claims that he and a group of teens experienced an eerie encounter on foggy summer night when they decided to park on the bridge with their lights out. According to this report, they saw and heard nothing while sitting in the dark. When they turned their lights on, the windshield was fogged up – but that’s not what gave them the scare. Covering the fogged windshield were hundreds of handprints from some invisible spook.

Another report claims the white lady ghost walked over the top of their car while a young couple was “parking” near the bridge.

Other’s report they definitely don’t feel alone on the haunted bridge at night, and have the eerie feeling of being watched.

Why the white lady remains is unclear – but one thing is sure - many residents avoid walking the green bridge alone on a dark foggy night.
