Maine baseball starts conference play with series win over Stony Brook

The University of Maine baseball team started conference play by taking two out of three games at Stony Brook.

Tommy Lawrence pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Black Bears to a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Lawrence allowed two walks and seven hits. He struck out seven. Scott Heath hit a sacrifice fly that scored Colin Gay in the fourth inning to produce the only run needed for Lawrence.

Stony Brook jumped out to a 5-0 lead and cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Black Bears in the second of the three game series and the first game of a Sunday doubleheader.

Troy Black recorded three hits and two RBI to lead Maine to an 8-3 victory in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Mike Connolly allowed two runs in seven innings to earn the victory for the Black Bears.

Maine (11-12/2-1) will continue conference play when they host Hartford for a three game series starting March 23rd.
