Maine and Providence to meet in hockey east quarterfinals

The University of Maine hockey team will be traveling to Providence for a best of three series in the hockey east tournament this weekend.

Martin Ouellette made 29 saves to lift Maine to a 2-0 victory over Merrimack in the opening round of the hockey east tournament.

The Black Bears were on a four game win-less streak before the start of the tournament.

Maine lost two games at home against Providence to end the regular season.

The Friars have been off since that sweep at Orono on the weekend of February 28th.

The winner will advance to the semifinals at the TD Garden on March 21st.

This is the first meeting between the two schools in the hockey east tournament since the 2001 semifinals when Providence defeated Maine 4-3.

Sophomore Ben Hutton leads the Black Bears with 13 goals and 14 assists on the season.

Connor Leen has recorded 23 points (six goals and 17 assists).

Maine (16-13-4) is only 1-10-3 on the road this season.

Ross Mauermann leads the Friars with 18 goals and 15 assists.

Jon Gillies from South Portland, is the regular goalie for the Friars.

Providence (19-9-6) has a record of 10-5-2 at home.
