Main Events of Madison's Craft Beer Week 2012

Madison's Craft Beer Week is coming! Beginning May 4, Madison will offer over 175 total beer events at roughly 50 area bars and restaurants. The full lineup of all the beer events is located at MadBeerWeek, and boy is it a doozy. For 10 days (May 4-13), people living in or just visiting Madison can try all kinds of unique beers, beer dinners, tastings and educational classes. A lot of these events, especially the tastings, are free. Other events require advance tickets.

Here are some great events for each day of Craft Beer Week, although many more are noted at the MadBeerWeek website:

Friday May 4

At The Stable Grill at Quivey's Grove, at least four Ale Asylum beers will be on tap.

At Quaker Steak and Lube in Middleton, there will be at least five Lake Louie beers on tap (as well as music by the Lake Louie Growlers). Event will run from 8:30 pm - 11:30 pm.

Sprecher's Restaurant & Pub will be hosting the Beer Olympics (6 pm - close). Try your hand at the Liter Mug Strong Man Competition, the Pony Keg Toss, Bottle Ring and Beer Baseball. Free to try and Sprecher prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Saturday May 5

Pooley's will be hosting a mini Cask Ale Festival, which is a great way to learn about and try some cask-conditioned ales. Advance tickets for this event will be sold at Brown Paper Tickets but you can also purchase individual beers at the festival. Some of the beers that will be poured include Central Waters, Summit Brewing Co (Horizon Imperial Red), Aecht Schlenkerla (Fastenbier (wooden stichfass)), Bells Brewing Co (Two-Hearted Ale) and Bells Brewing Co (Porter).

Sunday May 6

The Great Dane (Hilldale and Fitchburg locations) will be releasing a collaboration beer made by several area brewers. It will be called Common Thread California Common Ale. Event runs from 10 am- 2:30 pm.

Drackenberg's Cigar Bar will be showing a beer movie called Come Back Wisconsin. The movie showcases Wisconsin's history as a beer leader, then its decline in the 70's, to its latest resurgance as a craft beer capital. Event runs 5pm - 8pm.

Monday May 7

Come Back Inn will host a Beer History Pub Crawl from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. The tour will start at the Come Back Inn at 5:30 and finish at the Brocach Irish Pub on the Capital Square. The tour is free, but drinks are buy your own. Contact Andrew Erickson at andrewerickson83@gmail.com to reserve a spot.

Old Chicago will host a Port Huron Draft Takeover from 7pm - 10pm. Port Huron is Wisconsin Dells' newest commercial brewery and served its first beer just two weeks ago. At least four beers will be on tap: an amber alt, a hefeweizen, a honey blone and a porter.

Tuesday May 8

Old Chicago will host a Big Bay Draft Takeover from 11am - close. You can try a pint, or try all four of the beers (four 4 oz samples) for $4.49.

The Malt House will host Dark, Fiery, and Sensual - A Night of Dark Beer Delights from 5 pm - 10 pm. Beers offered will be Ommegang Seduction, Central Waters Peruvian Morning, Alaskan Smoked Porter and Tyranena Down 'N Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout.

Brickhouse BBQ will host Craft Beer Palooza from 7 pm - 10 pm. 18 breweries from around Wisconsin and the world will be sampled, including House of Brews, Potosi Brewery, O'so Brewery, Titletown Brewery and St. Francis Brewery. Firkins will also be offered. Admission is free.

Wednesday May 9

The beer bus has arrived! From 4 pm - 11pm, there will be a free Hop Head Beer Tour Co. shuttle bus that will be making hourly stops at the following sponsor locations: Alchemy Cafe, Coopers Tavern, Dexter's Pub, Drackenbergs Cigar Bar, Glass Nickel Pizza East, Harmony Bar and Grill and Natt Spil.

How about something educational? At The Sett at Union South from 5 pm - 6 pm, there will be a lecture entitled Beer Class: History of Wisconsin Craft Beer. The event will include beer tastings and a Sett pint glass to take home. Tickets are $5 and will be sold at the door.

Coopers Tavern will host a House of Brews Tasting from 6 pm - 10 pm. Brewmaster Page Buchanan will be serving four of his House of Brews beers. Foods made with beer from House of Brews will also be offered.

Thursday May 10

Jordan's Big 10 Pub will host the League of Libations from 6 pm - 10 pm. League of Libations (RSVP League of Libations on Facebook) is offering a complimentary tasting of America's finest craft beers.

The Malt House will host Beer Wars from 6 pm - 10 pm. Ale Asylum will be participating in an epic battle of beer vs. beer. Each pint purchased will count as a vote for either competing side.

Barriques (Middleton) will host a Dry Hop Single Hop Tasting from 6 pm - 8 pm. A neutral beer will be dry-hopped with four different hops so that you can taste the difference in these hops. Six single hop beers will also be sampled. Tickets are $5.

The Old Fashioned will be hosting a Central Waters Tasting Flight Night from 6 pm - 9 pm. A four board tasting flight will be $5 and an eight board tasting flight will be $10.

Friday May 11

Star Liquor will offer a free tasting of Pearl Street Brewery beers from 4 pm - 7 pm. Sample beers will include DTB, Pale Ale, El Hefe, Stout and Dankenstein IPA. Limited and special release beers will also be available.

Trixie's Liquor will be having a Rhinelander Shorty Day from 4 pm - 6 pm. Rhinelander craft bombers like Chocolate Bunny, Thumper IPA, Mystical Jack and Imperial Jack IPA will be featured.

Saturday May 12

The Malt House will be hosting a House of Brews Tap Takeover from 7 pm - 10 pm. Brewmaster Page Buchanan of House of Brews will be serving six of his beers from The Malt House' Wisconsin draft tower.

Sprecher Restaurant & Pub will be holding a Black Bavarian Dinner from 7 pm - 10 pm. The dinner will feature four courses, each paired with Black Bavarian. Reservations are required by Saturday, May 5th. $45 per person.

Sunday May 13 (last day!)

The Brewers Olympics and Picnic will be held from 2 pm - 6 pm at Demetral Park (601 N 6th St (Across Packers Ave from Oscar Meyer). Events will include grain sac races, target gravity discus, a home run derby and a distribution/beer server obstacle course (This is event is BYOB, but no macros will be allowed! You are also welcome to picnic).
