Magnolia Plantation is one of the best places to visit while in Charleston, South Carolina.  With gardens, a house tour, nature train, boat tour, petting zoo, and a new "from slavery to freedom" area, Magnolia Plantation offers history with beauty.

The gardens of Magnolia boast areas that over 325 years old, making them some of the oldest, un-retouched gardens in the United States.  There are countless species in bloom throughout the years, including camellias, daffodils, and azaeleas. With a trail that winds through the gardens, and multiple walks that jut off the main trail, one can get lost in the beauty provided by the gardens.

One of the "can't miss" items at Magnolia is the house tour. Lived in for over three centuries by the Drayton family, there is furniture, clothes, and quilts from all eras. The house also boasts one of the best porcelain collections owned by a private family in the United States.  The third house to be built on the site, it provides a glimpse into 19th century plantation life.

But the best reason to visit- or re-visit- Magnolia is their new project: From Slavery to Freedom. Five cabins are set up, in their natural states, showing a unique and wonderful view of African-American history. From slavery and Reconstruction to the 1920's, and up through the civil rights era, each cabin you explore takes you back to a by-gone era.

Magnolia Plantation provides an entire day of exploring and learning for the whole family.  A perfect Southern combination of history, beauty, and variety offer an unforgettable plantation experience.
