A former Nevada Wolf Pack football player beat the Wolf Pack baseball team on Tuesday.
Former Wolf Pack backup quarterback Mason Magleby pitched two scoreless innings for Sacramento State as the Hornets shut down the Wolf Pack 4-1 in Sacramento.
Magleby, who completed 10-of-11 passes for the Wolf Pack football team in 2011 for 109 yards and four touchdowns, allowed just two harmless hits while striking out one in the fifth and sixth innings to help beat the Pack.
The Wolf Pack fell to 5-4 with the loss and the Hornets improved to 4-4.
Magleby transferred to Sacramento State after the 2011 football season. He spent the 2012 football season as the Hornets' backup quarterback behind starter Garrett Safron. Magleby also was the Hornets' holder on field goals and extra points and was the backup long snapper. The 6-foot-2 junior right-hander, completed 8-of-11 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns for the Hornets in 2012. He was 2-of-4 for 36 yards and a touchdown against Eastern Washington on Oct. 20 and 6-of-7 for 74 yards and a touchdown on Sept,. 22 against North Dakota.
Magleby's only other pitching appearance for the Hornets before Tuesday was a scoreless inning in Austin, Tex., against the Texas Longhorns. He pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out situation in the 6-3 loss.
Magleby also pitched out of trouble against the Pack. He allowed a two-out single to Shaun Mize in the fifth and a one-out single to Lance Berringer in the sixth but escaped unharmed both times.
The Wolf Pack had just five hits against four Hornet pitchers. But the Pack had their chances. Curtis Frisbie doubled and Hugo Hernandez coaxed a walk off Sacramento State starter Tyler Hoelzen in the fourth but Hoelzen got out of the game by getting Brad Gerig to line out to center field.
The Pack also had the bases loaded with nobody out in the ninth and did not score.
Kewby Meyer singled and Brett Jones and Austin Byler each walked to put the tying runs on base against Hornet reliever Brandon Creel to start the ninth. Brennan Leitao then relieved Creel and the 6-foot-2 sophomore retired Scott Kaplan, Mize and Ryan Teel in order without a run crossing the plate to preserve the win.
The only Wolf Pack run scored on a RBI ground out by Mize in the seventh. A Hornet error also helped the Pack's cause in the inning.
Barry Timko started and went five innings for the Pack. The 6-3 sophomore left-hander pitched well, allowing four hits and three runs while walking one and striking out four.
The Hornets scored a run on three hits off Pack reliever Colby Blueberg in the sixth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Michael Bradshaw and Michael Fain combined to pitch two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth for the Pack.
The Wolf Pack will return home to take on Holy Cross in a doubleheader on Saturday (11 a.m,.) and a single game on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Peccole Park.
