On Ostara in 2013, a new store opened in Haverhill. At Magik & Mayhem, Anastacia Dewar, eclectic Witch, sells pagan items and services to all comers, and dispenses advice for free. Ms. Dewar is proud to run the first such store in her area!
Magik & Mayhem sells jewelry, smudge fans, and runestones on consignment for their artists. Ms. Dewar herself makes the wands sacred to Aphrodite—she uses cherry wood, and always cuts and crafts the wood on a Friday. The hard-to-find dragon’s blood ink is available because of a special arrangement with its producer. “To get that ink is impossible. But I made that connection, and it all just works.”
The store offers classes—all listed on their Facebook site. Customers can also find the candles, oils (all made by Magik & Mayhem), herbs (Angelica through Yarrow), etc., that they expect at a pagan store. For just $10 you can get smudged—and Ms. Dewar will throw in a blessing for free, “because once you cleanse, you’ve got to seal.”
Her specialty is advising “newbies,” pagan young people with non-pagan parents, who are just learning about their faith path. “They’re the type of kids that usually hide it from their parents. They’re fresh in the pagan or Wiccan pathway, and there’s no one to talk to. And I’m like, ‘Well, let’s sit down and talk.’ They know it’s safe. I didn’t have” such a resource as a young person, Ms. Dewar confesses, and she is happy to be able to do this for her community.
Ms. Dewar says, “People will come by, ‘Hey, are you open?’ I say, ‘No; do you need something?’” If you need something from the store during off-hours, call Alex Dewar at 978-204-4825; he’ll open the store for you if he can.
