Five years ago, Minna Choi founded Magik*Magik Orchestra as a way to collaborate with a diverse range of new musicians. Since then, the orchestra, which has ranged in size from a single violinist to a 70+ piece ensemble, has collaborated on over 100 creative projects that have deftly fused elements of rock music with classical compositions.
Over the years, Choi, the project's Music Director, has gained the respect of highly-lauded artists including Death Cab For Cutie, Explosions in the Sky, and Tao - just to name a few. Her ability to identify talent and work with the nuances of differing backgrounds and disciplines means she can command a stellar line-up for any event she wishes to create.
"When We Were Young" is no exception and it is coming to Fox Theatre Oakland on Friday, January 31, to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Magik*Magik Orchestra. Three 45-minute acts will be conducted by Choi, along with Maestro Michael Morgan, conductor of the Oakland Symphony, lending his talents to a few of those pieces. To honor the evening's theme, each act will also perform one of their favorite songs from childhood.
Confirmed artists for “When We Were Young” include:
Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers
How to Dress Well
The Lonely Forest
Maestro Michael Morgan
The Pacific Boychoir
This year, Magik*Magik Orchestra has partnered with Bandpage to offer one-of-a-kind experiences with some of the performing artists. Winners of the auction's raffles, whose proceeds benefit Magik for Kids, an organization that offers innovative educational opportunities to kids all over the Bay Area, can win a trip to Iceland Airwaves, a chance to play bocci ball with the Dodos, brunch with John Vanderslice, and much more.
Tickets to this highly-coveted event, produced by Noise Pop and Another Planet Entertainment, can be purchased here. With the aforementioned acts above, it's an affair not to be missed (and will certainly sell out fast).
