'Magicka: Wizard Wars' enters open beta today

Today, May 27, Paradox Interactive and Paradox North opened the gates to the general public for the "Magicka: Wizard Wars" open beta (via announcement on their website). For those of you who don't know, "Magicka: Wizard Wars" is a take on the original robe wearing game, but this time, players take part in 1-on-1 dueling or 4-on-4 multiplayer battles.

In "Magicka," players must harness the powers of the elements to defeat their opponents. You can combine the elements to create different attacks. A great feature of the game is that it's not just simply point, click, and shoot. It takes quite a bit of skill to be good at this game. You need to be agile in controlling your character and smart about which spells to use at certain times.

Last week, Boston Games Examiner was able to jump into a few sessions before the public was able to and check out some of the new features. The new features include:

  • "a new Wizard Warfare map set inside the dark caves of Galdrholl Halls"
  • "a new 'Raise Dead' Magick has also been added"
  • "New robes, staves, and unique skins"

All in all, these new features combine for a really fun experience. Not only do the new additions make the game challenging, but, as you play, you'll see other characters with cool gear, and you'll find yourself saying, "I want that robe, too!"

It was sad when the sessions ended because you just kept wanting to play in order to make money for the new items available. However, the servers should now be open and players can once again begin the grind for gear and leader board domination.

You can download "Magicka: Wizard Wars" now and play in the open beta. The game is free to play and available on PC via Steam. For more information about the game, check out the PAX East 2014 coverage regarding "Magicka: Wizard Wars."
