It's been quite awhile since I last wrote and many new things continue to happen in the homeschooling community. It seems that it continues to grow and be a viable option for many families. Here in Long Beach we have a wonderful opportunity in having Great Educational Experiences or gee! which provides core and enrichment classes for homeschoolers. Currently gee! offers a wonderful class based on the "Magic Tree House" book series written by Mary Pope Osborne and taught by Dana Stibor. This is an excellent way for young homeschoolers to come together and read a great book and then discuss the history, learn vocabulary words, and write about the books. The first book the club read was "Dinosaur Before Dark" and the next book coming up will be "Knight at Dawn." The book club meets at gee! which is located at 3960 N. Studebaker Rd., #102 (right next to Paint N Glaze).
Along with the book club is an activity club which is experiential in nature. The activity part of the book club meets in El Dorado Park and is led by Page Mc Kinney. In this club, themes from the books will be presented in a fun and exciting way, so that young learners will not only get to read the book they will get to experience the book through imagination and creative activities. In the "Dinosaur Before Dark" series, the children will make their own fossils, dig for fossils, and have a scavenger hunt. In all the activity clubs the children will decorate a "treehouse" and fill in a timeline pertaining to the books. All children will receive a goodie bag that consists of non-candy or food items. If you have any questions about this class or others that gee! offers you can contact Cindy Castro at (562) 331-4800
