The most important thing for any gay child is the support and acceptance from their parents. E.J. Johnson has plenty of that support from his parents which is a pretty big deal when one of those parents is a sports legend like Magic Johnson. As reported by E! Online Thursday, the retired NBA superstar opened up about his son, who publicly came out as gay on Monday.
Although it is no surprise that both Magic and his wife Cookie would support their son, it is good to hear the words and feel the love two parents have for their child no matter who they are. The 20-year old E.J. is in the spotlight because of his father and having that support has allowed him to be very open. Magic, who has been active in the gay movement told TMZ:
"I love E.J. so much, that's my main man. I think he really wanted to be out. But he was torn...He just didn't know how. He just said, 'This is my moment. This is my time. I'm happy to share with the world who I am.' And I said, 'Go, E.J., go."
Magic knows the feeling of being discriminated against and stereotyped and knows firsthand the distance a person can travel in life when they have that support. When Magic shared publicly that he contracted the HIV virus over 20 years ago, he too faced gay rumors and negative stereotypes about who he was and how he contracted the virus. Opening up to those he loved allowed him to live and be himself and now he is seeing the same renewal in his son.
"This is a good moment for us as a family, and a greater moment for him. Now he's just the bubbly kid we knew again. I'm behind him a million percent. This is really wonderful for him."
