Nestled in the city’s South Street community is a space that is sure to ignite the imagination in us all. Operating on a daily basis, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is the vision of mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar. A visionary art environment and gallery, as well as a community arts center, the site encompasses half a city block and features indoor and outdoor spaces. The awe-inspiring oasis space is completely encrusted with Zagar’s own tiles, folk art, statuettes of all sizes, colorful glass, mirrors and found objects, all situated in a way that invites visitors to ponder them from a new point of view. Ranging from symbolic personal pieces crafted by the founder to bold visual statements about current world affairs, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens offers something for everyone within an immersive, tactile environment. A non-profit organization, the Philadelphia Magic Gardens offers unique and engaging public educational events, some of which include the ‘Shattering Expectations Mosaic Exhibition’. Produced in conjunction with the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia, the show will highlight the area’s mosaic artists and their processes. ‘Shattering Expectation’ opens on March 7, 2014 and runs through April 20.
