Maggie Mudd vegan ice cream store in Bernal to close April 3

Well, times are hard. And it was only by chance that I found out, via the online Uptown Almanac, that dairy-free ice cream store Maggie Mudd (903 Cortland at Folsom, 415-641-5291) will close April 3. Maggie Mudd was beloved for its mix of colorful, eclectic dairy-free (mostly soy) flavors mixed with some dairy options. The store was open odd hours, and it seemed that the effort of putting out all those flavors plus staffing issues might have been too labor-intensive for the owners.

However, Maggie Mudd's custom online cake delivery business seems profitable--they say they've delivered 14,000-plus miles in the city since they started--and will continue. And I hope the big, luscious ice cream cone outside the store will stay as well.

In other news, a foodie blog reports that Ti Couz creperie in the MIssion will close "any day now," driven out after 19 years by high rents.

Happy to say Bernal blog Bernalwood is as cool as ever, a mixture of wry commentary and great pictures. I particularly liked this 20-something's well-written take on North Bernal (who would have ever thought of Bernal as a hip "nabe,"and easy commute but gee, I guess it is, and welcome to 2011!). Ashley Wolff's piece on and image of the Shooting Star plant blooming on Bernal Hill was also delectable.

I think Bernal needs both sorts--the up and comers who dig the neighborhood for what it can give them, and the people who've been here a long time and are providing a sort of legacy, whether it be intellectual, progressive or artistic.
