Magazine Street derives its name from the location of the magazin (French) or warehouse which was built in the late 1700’s by Miro to store General James Wilkinson’s Kentucky products. According to John Chase’s book Frenchmen, Desire, and Good Children, Wilkinson “…had a talent for conspiracy…matchless in the history of the Mississippi Valley. A captain in the Revolutionary War, Wilkinson fought with Washington and Benedict Arnold.” He also plotted to force out Washington as commander-in-chief. Wilkinson schemed in commercial matters, too. Despite his less than above board methods, his profitable connections in New Orleans was one of the most important factors that promoted the acquisition of Louisiana by the USA.
Today’s Magazine Street is six miles long, and its curves match those of the Mississippi River. Beginning at Canal Street in the New Orleans Central Business District, it meanders through the Garden District, uptown, Audubon Park, and ends at the levee. It has been called the “…quintessential Main Street of 100 years ago.” (Aiden Gill in the article by Laura Claverie, “Tour New Orleans' Magazine Street for 6 miles of shopping, eating”) In this day and age, it remains one of the coolest, funkiest, bohemian, treasured, and unique streets in New Orleans.
