Madonna Instagram firestorm: Madonna says ‘Forgive me’ for N-word for her son

A Madonna Instagram firestorm ensued after Madonna called her son Rocco Ritchie the N-word on Instagram. "I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N-word on Instagram," Madonna said in an apologetic statement on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, to E! News. "It was not meant as a racial slur ... I am not a racist."

In regard to having used the N-word for her son on Instagram, Madonna continued to apologize. "There's no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention ... It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it's a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression. Forgive me."

On Friday night, 55-year-old Madonna posted a picture of her 13-year-old son Rocco on Instagram. The snapshot showed Madonna’s son boxing and was accompanied by the words, "No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out!" along with the hashtag "#disni--a."

Before Madonna realized that her Instagram comment might upset some fans, a firestorm ensued criticizing Madonna for having used the N-word. While some people attributed Madonna’s use of the N-word to ignorance, others thought that it was an insulting and racist term that needed an apology.

Even though Madonna quickly changed the Instagram caption that accompanied the picture of her son, it was too late and Madonna has been spending the past day trying to apologize for her bad choice of words.

Besides Rocco, who is Madonna’s son with her ex, director Guy Ritchie, Madonna has three other children, Lourdes, David and Mercy. David and Mercy are black, adopted from the African nation of Malawi.

This is the second Madonna Instagram firestorm this month. At the beginning of the year, Madonna had posted a photo of Rocco and his two young friends holding up bottles of liquor. Back then, on Sunday, Jan. 5, Madonna didn’t say “Forgive me,” but wrote in her response, "No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor!" she wrote in another Instagram caption. "Don't start the year off with judgment!"
