Madonna and GLAAD will honor Anderson Cooper with an award for his work as an openly gay media professional. According to ABC News on March 2, Madonna will present Cooper with the award at the 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards.
Madonna and Anderson Cooper have been friends for years and GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said both celebrities have used their fame to help support people in the LGBT community.
This comes one year after Cooper finally revealed to the world that he is gay and is very happy with his life. Even in 2007, when Out magazine ranked him as one of the most influential gay men in America, he refused to openly talk about his personal life. He said for years that he understands why people want to talk about it, but opening up his personal life to the public would have hurt his job as a journalist, a person who is supposed to observe the news adapt in any group.
However, when he finally spoke up about his sexuality, he said he felt that by keeping his personal life personal, it almost looked like he was ashamed or was hiding it, and that is not the perception he wanted anyone to have because he has no problems at all with people knowing he is gay.
The Madonna GLAAD award will reward Anderson Cooper with his stance in helping people in the LGBT community understand they have nothing to be ashamed of.
