Madison Primary Center has extremely low ISTEP scores. In 2010 the 3rd graders scored 52% on the English/Language Arts section of the test. The average score for South Bend School Corporation was 66%, while the state average was 79%. The 4th graders scored 32%, while the district scored 64% and the state scored 77%. In 2010 the 3rd graders scored 58% on the Math Section of the test, while the district scored 63% and the start scored76%. The 4th graders scored 28% on the Math section, while the district scored 57% and the state scored 75%. On the Science section of the test the 4th graders scored 31%, while the district scored 58% and the state scored75%. These scores are horrifying and it seems that the scores get worse as the students move along in school, instead of get better.
The student/teacher ratio is 17.3 with 481 students in the 2009-2010 school year and 27.7 full time teachers. This ratio is actually on the lower end compared to other schools, so it seems that these students should be getting more one on one attention.
441 students out of 481 are eligible for free or reduced lunches, which is 92%. Most of the students who go to this school are living in poverty, it would seem. That could be a major factor in why this school is one of the worst schools in the district.
There is nothing that the school can do about the poverty level, but they can try to help raise the ISTEP scores in the classroom. They should do everything in their power to educate these children.
