Madison County Nature Trail

Madison County Nature Trail is a woodsy, tranquil park perched high atop Green Mountain and although it is located within the limits of the highly technical and flourishing city of Huntsville, Alabama you won’t find a trace of the city within the borders of the Nature Trail. Tucked away, the 72 acre park is the delight of any who discover its scenic treasure.

The locale offers a 2.25 mile hiking trail around the pristine Sky Lake while wild duck and geese float picturesquely on the water’s surface. The hike is an easy one, great for any age.

But the most popular spot at the Madison County Nature Trail is the Cambron Covered Bridge. In any season, whether surrounded by dogwood in the Spring, or enveloped in the colors of fall foliage, the popular covered bridge makes for a great photo opportunity.

The Nature Trail is a true gathering place, with excellent facilities, a large pavilion with many reclining wood benches beckoning you to sit and take in the beauty. Plenty of picnic tables beside the lake make for great picnics with the family; short piers at the edge of the lake entice fishermen to throw a line to catch a stubborn catfish.

There is no admission charge. The hours fluctuate with the time of sunset, opening at 7:00 am and you can call to reserve the pavilion for an event. Fishing is allowed, but only for those under sixteen years old or over sixty for a small fee of $1.50. Fishing is not allowed on weekends and there is a limit of 10 fish per person. Children under five may fish for free.

There are two other structures on the property that are available to the public along the trail, an historic cabin which originally belonged to Charles Green, the homesteader that Green Mountain was named after and a open air chapel sometimes used for small weddings.

If you want to walk the dog, enjoy a picnic, or a quiet stroll through nature then the Madison County Nature Trail is the place for you to leave all your cares behind. It is not your typical city park.
