Madison Capitol boasts a Christmas tree, menorah and Festivus pole. What?

Wisconsin’s State Capitol has decked its halls to pay homage to multiple seasonal holidays again this year. But the 2013 display in the heart of the Badger State’s legislative activity includes one entry that may puzzle plenty of Badger State denizens.

The Capitol rotunda has a lovely 30-foot Christmas tree, a large free-standing Hanukkah menorah, a Winter Solstice scene with an unusual collection of iconic figures, and a Festivus pole.

What is a Festivus pole?

Thought you’d never ask. This shiny, unadorned aluminum pole points to a parody holiday introduced in a 1997 episode of the now-syndicated Seinfeld television sitcom. Conceived by Seinfeld scriptwriter Dan O’Keefe, Festivus was described as a “holiday for the rest of us,” referring to non-celebrants of the other December occasions.

Festivus caught on. Each year, on December 23, Seinfeld fans post Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking greetings to mark the occasion.

Oh, and Madison’s Capitol includes a Festivus fixture. Raise your hand, if you are not at all surprised.
