Mahaffey earned the honor for her service and dedication to helping others off the court. She has been active in many community service events on and off campus. Being an animal lover Mahaffey has dedicated many hours to Companion Animal Alliance, Friends of the Animals Baton Rouge (FOTA) and Pets Against Shelter Surrender (PASS). Her love of animals has led Mahaffey to volunteer as a foster home for dogs awaiting adoption. She has fostered eight dogs over the last year.
Mahaffey already has plans for Spring Break next year, but it will not include a trip to the beach. Instead, Mahaffey will donate her time to FOTA.
Mahaffey has also volunteered her time to Camp Tiger, which is a camp on the LSU campus run by the LSU Med. School for children who have special needs. Mafaffey also helped the 2013 freshman class move in to their dorms at the beginning of the fall semester, along with other student athletes. These are just a few of the events that Mahaffey contributed to over the past year.
Fran Flory, the head coach for the volleyball team had this to say about Mahaffey, “Madi’s giving heart and passion to help animals embodies the true spirit of our program. We’re extremely proud of the impact that she’s made in the Baton Rouge community. Her hard work and dedication are what makes her worthy of this honor from the SEC.”
This is Mahaffey's first time to be named to the SEC Volleyball Service Team in her career as an LSU Tiger. Mahaffey is majoring in Sports Administtration.
The LSU volleyball team will begin NCAA Tournament play on Friday, December 6, 2013 at the University of Washington campus. The Tigers will face Michigan at 7:00 p.m. CST in the opening round of play.
