Becky Adams is an infamous madame from the UK whose memoir won her a Brit Writers Award. Since then, she launched a non-profit telephone service where volunteers find sex workers for people with disabilities.
Now Becky is taking that effort one step further. She is opening a brothel exclusively for people with mental and physical disabilities (including returning war vets and people with autism).:
"You cannot stop a disabled person from having a normal life or having the same opportunities of an able-bodied person - it's discrimination. So I am a facilitator working on behalf of the person to find a sex worker - and it's completely legal. To refuse to do it is a breach of human rights. I act as their voice and limbs.
There are people who have literally spent their whole lives in institutions who have never had physical contact with anyone other than a nurse or doctor. They have never been held at night by another naked person. And a person who cannot use his arms can't relieve themselves. Literally, they have no way of sexual release, but they have all these sexual feelings."
Acknowledging the sexual needs of the disabled and couching it in terms of a fundamental right is pretty amazing. .
I have a not-for-profit organization Shining Service Worldwide that helps women veterans so I have had some experience hearing about the challenges they face sexually. Both men and women struggle to successfully re-integrate when they return home. So, any effort that makes them feel more normal is wonderful.
