Mad Mex Big Azz Margaritas for $7

Hands down, the best margarita in Oakland, possibly the entire city, is at Mad Mex. Located in the heart of Oakland at the corner of Atwood St. and Bates St., Mad Mex is home to the famous Big Azz Margarita. This margarita is 22 oz. and can be enjoyed frozen or on the rocks. The original flavors are strawberry, kiwi, mango, and raspberry. Depending on the time of the year, you can get white peach, bartlett pear, green apple, blackberry, candy cane, apple cider, and nog-a-ritas. In addition to the large assortment of flavors, they're only $7 from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. every day. There are even some days, such as Cinco de Mayo, when they're $7 all day. According to the bartender, one Big Azz Margarita contains 6-7 shots of tequila, that's about $1 per shot of tequila. What a steal! Trust me when I say that these margaritas pack a serious punch. If you don't think that one margarita will be enough, my advice is to sit for a few minutes before ordering margarita #2. I learned the hard way on several occasions that one Big Azz Margarita is more than enough.

If you decide that you want to go and enjoy one of these margaritas, one thing to keep in mind is that Mad Mex is one of the most popular restaurants in Oakland and it’s really small. In my opinion, the best time to go and get a margarita is around 10:45 p.m. Mad Mex has half price food starting at 11:00 p.m., so if you go at around 10:45 p.m., you could sit at the bar and get a margarita and put your name in for a table.

For those of you wondering, "I thought that the margaritas were $6, what happened?" Since Mr. Onorato decided he wanted the drink tax, Mad Mex bumped up the prices to $7 instead of charging $6.60.
