The TV adaptation is based on the controversial, best-selling book of the same name by V.C. Andrews. The 1979 novel was previously adapted as a film in 1987. It starred Victoria Tennant, Louise Fletcher, Kristy Swanson and Jeb Stuart Adams.
"Flowers in the Attic" tells the story of four young siblings, two boys and two girls, who are abandoned by their mother, Corinne (played by Heather Graham), after the tragic death of their father, and forced to endure harsh treatment living in the attic of their grandparents’ mansion. They are subjected to cruel emotional and physical abuse resulting from a dark, long-hidden family secret.
The children soon form a family unit of their own. But as the older siblings Chris (Dye) and Cathy (Shipka) come of age emotionally and physically while caring for their younger brother and sister, their family’s sordid past entraps them further as they begin to develop an unsettling relationship. Ellen Burstyn plays the children’s evil grandmother, Olivia.
Kayla Alpert ("Up All Night") will write the film, which will be directed by Deborah Chow ("The High Cost of Living").
In addition to playing Sally Draper in AMC's critically acclaimed drama "Mad Men," Shipka has also appeared on "Monk," "Heroes" and "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23."
