Families took advantage of their shopping to celebrate, participate and even learn about Three Kings Day as Macy's at Westfield Citrus Park in Tampa, Fla. honored Three Kings Day (Día de los Reyes Magos) today.
Although Three Kings Day is celebrated in Spanish/Hispanic countries January 6, many people have continued the tradition living away from their own country. For another year Macy's wanted to give back to its community and families in keeping the tradition alive, as the second floor in the children's department was transformed with a DJ booth, a puppet and crafts area and a meet and greet with the Three Wise Men (Los Reyes Magos) - Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar.
The early afternoon event included face painting, sweets, music and a puppet show. The first 50 customers who made a $35 or more purchase in the Children's Department received a special gift. Children including grown-ups took photos with the Wise Men.
January 6 is Three Kings Day, a day to remember the arrival of the Biblical Wise Men to Bethlehem with gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh for baby Jesus. For children it’s more important than Christmas, children leave grass near their bed for the camels and in exchange the Three Kings leave gifts for them.
In the US the tradition continues within the Hispanic culture as it is throughout Tampa Bay with traditional meals, parties, parades, and special church services.
