About Ambassador Family for Macy’s Passport-Glamorama-Samantha AngeLina Roberson 10-year old Samantha noticed a lump on her leg a week after visiting the waterpark in the summer of 2013, which was shortly accompanied by leg pains. Initially thinking the pains were growing pains, her family initially didn’t think it was a cause of concern. Noticing that the lump was not subsiding, Samantha and her family visited the doctors at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
On October 31, 2013, Samantha was diagnosed with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer that develops within the connective tissues of the body which specifically affects the muscles and bones. In order to combat the cancer the tumor had to be removed, they had to take an additional 6 inches of the bone, and subsequently, followed the surgery with adult radiation treatment 5 days a week for a month.
Although Samantha now only requires a single weekly chemotherapy session, she is still fighting the cancer, using a walker and or wheel chair if she is feeling weak. Samantha and her family travel approximately 3.5 hours from Roscoe every Sunday to spend the night at the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s Hospital so that she can receive her chemotherapy treatments each Monday. Samantha finds happiness in playing with her two dogs and is regularly accompanied by members of her supportive family, including her mother, father and sister, Gabrielle.
