It’s almost time for the 87th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and this year’s festivities look to be bigger and better than ever. On November 1, Broadway World confirmed that the annual holiday extravaganza will air on NBC on Thursday, November 28 beginning at 9:00 a.m. in all time zones.
According to a Macy’s press release, several high profile new floats will debut this year. The internationally renowned masters of imagination, Cirque du Soleil, will star in a new Cirque du Soleil float and performance in the 87th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition, the award-winning global cruise line Royal Caribbean International will premiere a new float.
Amy Kule, executive producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, said: “Designed by the artists of Macy’s Parade Studio, the new Royal Caribbean float promises to astonish audiences as it makes its maiden voyage down the streets of Manhattan this November.”
According to a Nickelodeon press release, the SpongeBob SquarePants balloon will debut a new look for the 87th annual parade. This year the iconic character will don a holiday-themed ensemble for this year's celebration, and that includes a supersized Santa hat.
"It's not very often that the term 'square' and 'balloon' are used together, but for nearly a decade the SpongeBob SquarePants balloon has been one of the many highlights of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade," Kule said.
The first-ever SpongeBob SquarePants Balloon debuted in 2004. This year's SpongeBob balloon will stand at 44-feet tall, 41-feet long and 34-feet wide.
Another highlight of this year’s parade will be a tribute to the upcoming 75th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz.” Variety has revealed that Warner Bros. will feature a hot air balloon and characters in the 87th annual parade, paying homage to the classic 1939 film.
NBC Research estimates that 43.2 million viewers watched at least part of NBC's three-hour "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade" coverage last year.
