With tight budget dollars and a decline in property values, community colleges have felt the pinch in their income. Rather than pout, the leadership of Macomb Community College (MCC) elected to develop a talent for applying for and successfully delivering programs supported by grants. Their most recent triumph was announced today: $24.9 million to the Michigan Coalition for Advanced Manufacturing (M-CAM), an MCC-led coalition.
The MCC-led coalition will provide funding to eight Michigan community colleges helping them leverage opportunities in advanced manufacturing, responding to employer needs and preparing individuals for jobs in computer numerical control machining, welding/fabrication, technician and production operations. According to MCC those targeted for training include displaced workers, employed workers who require skills upgrading and veterans.
MCC is a two-year college with more than 40,000 students. In addition to traditional college courses, MCC uses grants such as this for continuing education, career transition and online offerings.
“Community colleges are vital to connecting education, training and students to workplace needs,” said James Jacobs, Ph.D., president, MCC. “This $24.9 million Department of Labor grant is an important step forward for Michigan community colleges and employers in leveraging our historical strength in ‘making things’ while harnessing the promise of advanced manufacturing for the economic benefit of our residents, businesses and communities.”
MCC serves all of Macomb County on two campuses. The Center Campus is at Hall and Garfield in Clinton Township. At this location there is a culinary school and arts center along with a full slate of classes. The South Campus is on 12 Mile Road in Warren. It is at this campus that the sports center is located and a full slate of classes is available.
