The Grammy Awards had a history of downplaying Hip Hop as a viable category. With Jay-Z receiving nine nominations and rap-duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis receiving seven, that statement no longer holds weight..
The highlight of the Grammy Awards may be Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ gay marriage anthem, “Same Love” which is nominated for best song. If this wasn’t enough, the new Hip Hop Batman and Robin are also nominated for best new artist and best rap performance.
Although Macklemore and Lewis have been the center of attention in 2013, three other artists, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell Williams have tied with the duo in nominations.
Even with Jay-Z’s nine nominations, it seems the focus is on Macklemore and Lewis. Their second studio album, “The Heist” is on board for album of the year and best rap album. The single, “Thrift Shop” is up for best rap song while their smash hit, “Can’t Hold Us” is up for best music video.
“Same Love” may be nominated for Song of the Year, but it’s up against other hits like “Royals” by Lorde (4 Grammy nominations), “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars, “Roar” by Katy Perry and “Just Give Me a Reason” by Pink, featuring Nate Ruess.
