Macklemore & Ryan Lewis dethroned Bruno Mars this week when their single, “Thrift Shop,” took the top spot on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart. With a no. 1 under their belt, the indie duo became the second unsigned act to hit the top spot since Lisa Loeb did so with "Stay (I Missed You)" in '94, Time reported on Friday.
Loeb was not signed to a record label when the folksy pop “Stay,” a single from the “Reality Bites” soundtrack, hit no. 1 on the Hot 100 in 1994. It was a distinction she held for a long time until Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' funky “Thrift Shop,” featuring Wanz, reached the pinnacle this week. The colorful music video for the hip-hop hit about embracing second-hand threads has been viewed over 67 million times on YouTube as of press time.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have expressed no desire to join a record label. Instead, they self-released their debut album, “The Heist,” which peaked at no. 2 on Billboard's albums chart back in October. Coincidentally, Lisa Loeb will be releasing her seventh studio album, “No Fairy Tale,” on Jan. 29.
