The 56th Annual Grammy Awards took place on Jan. 26, 2014, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Here is what this Grammy winner said backstage in the press room.
MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS
Best New Artist
Best Rap Album: “The Heist”
Best Rap Performance: “Thrift Shop” featuring Wanz
Best Rap Song: “Thrift Shop” featuring Wanz
How does it feel to be Grammy winners?
Lewis: It’s the pinnacle, the apex, to be up here. And more important, to be up here and to celebrate “Same Love,” and having the marriages on stage, my sister getting married tonight as well, was phenomenal. It was amazing.
What do you think about making Grammy history on stage with that multiple-couples marriage ceremony officiated by Queen Latifah after your Grammy performance with Madonna?
Lewis: I still have chills now. I’m excited to watch it back. It was amazing to work with Madonna and Queen Latifah: two legends. The whole thing has been a ride. We’re just grateful to be there.
What message does “Same Love” have?
Macklemore: It’s a message of equality. It’s a message of tolerance and compassion to end homophobia, bigotry, fear, hatred that has been an institution here in America and make one step closer to the change that is so important, in terms of following your heart, loving who you want to love.
I thank the Grammys for giving us this platform. I don’t think 10 years ago a song like “Same Love” would have been embraced on this level by any mainstream media. And the fact that radio got behind it, the fact that television got behind it, that awards shows got behind it, it’s a testament to where we’re headed in this country.
Not many people win Grammys for self-releasing their own music, but you did it. Can you talk about being truly independent artists who don’t need a major record company to succeed?
It’s incredible. You don’t have a record label to thank. We can just thank ourselves. It’s awesome.
